Research Themes

Space and defense autonomy

AI based technologies hold great promise for advanced automated functionalities, but significant advances in autonomy are needed so that the responsivity that is promised by machine learning does not require compromising on reliability and robustness in high performance, safety critical operations.

Algorithmic Fairness

We seek to integrate the notion of fairness into the design of machine learning and optimization algorithms, because of the increasingly prominent role these algorithms play in societally relevant decision making.

Multi-agent robotics and intelligent swarms

We seek to develop coordinated algorithms that help groups of robots work together to achieve a common goal that is beyond the capability of any single robot in isolation.

Distributed learning for extreme-scale systems

In large, distributed systems, such as smart grids, intelligent transportation systems, logistics networks, and other applications, we seek to exploit structure to facilitate fast, high dimensional computation in a distributed manner despite limited resources.
